A guide to going under 3 hours
Runners today are spoiled for choice in tracking their runs, automatically and with rich statistics provided as well. Services like RunKeeper, Strava and many others provide free or cheap services, that combined with your smartphone, gps watch and/or heart rate monitor, give you most of the metrics any professional athlete would have, including visualizations like pace graphs and progress tracking over time.
Although you can use Google Earth or other online map services to look at your routes, there is one site that comes in particularly handy - the GMAPS Pedometer page.
According to its website, the Gmap Pedometer website is a "a little hack that uses Google's superb mapping application to help record distances traveled during a running or walking workout."
It's a fantastic tool which helped me to plan and measure routes, especially once you start doing longer runs which require a little forethought about the route.
