A guide to going under 3 hours
The Wikipedia article on the marathon has a list of the progression of world record times in the marathon across men and women. There's a bunch of famous names in there including Haile Gebrselassie, Paula Radcliffe and Eliud Kipchoge.
For the men, the elusive 2 hour mark, once thought far out of reach, is now tantalizingly close, and it's foreseeable that it'll be cracked in the next ten years - which would be one of the biggest milestones in athletics history, to go along with breaking the 4 minute mile. In the womens' event, it took 16 years for Brigid Kosgei to break Paula Radcliffe's long standing record.
